Living Without A Microwave Reddit
Do any of you NOT have a microwave at home?
I was looking up the numbers for households with microwaves and I found this from The Census Bureau:
The percent of households with a microwave climbed from 82 percent in 1992 to a nearly universal 97 percent in 2011
Then I found an article from 2014 which said microwave sales are on the decline.
So if you're among the small percent of households without a microwave, why don't you own this appliance?

Eh, I think sales have plateaued because everyone has one and they don't break that much.

I bought one off craigslist for 25 bucks when I moved nine years ago. It's still happily irradiating my food with microwaves.

Montgomery Wards folded up in when? 2001?
I have a microwave from monkey wards that says "Mfg date: May 1984" on the back, so it's old enough to buy liquor and vote. Still works like a charm and has plenty of room inside.
... everyone has one and they don't break that much.
I think you're on to something.

Just a hypothesis, aside from your comment as well - perhaps it's because more younger people living at home/shared apartments to make ends meet -> no need for new household appliances per person/pair -> sales of common appliances reduces.
IE - when you kill people's wages, you kill their ability to make homes individually and spend money in industries that surround home furnishings.

My sister doesn't, but it's because she believes the stupid conspiracy theories about them changing the chemical composition of food (a process I describe as "cooking").

It's more the containers you microwave food/drink in than the actual microwave that would cause problems.

Perhaps the greatest accomplishment of our microwave ovens has been to change our attitude about leftovers from "ugh, leftovers?" to "yay, leftovers!" Trying to reheat something in the oven or a pan is so much more likely to over cook it and dry it out.

Plus it severely limits the main appeal of leftovers: you don't have to cook the meal.

I don't think I've ever been to a house that doesn't have one.....in a lot of homes they're built in and transfer with the house, so sales probably are down. Ours is over the stove, built into the cabinets, and has an exhaust fan built into the bottom.

I kind of hate the over the stove microwave. Sometimes they are too close to the stove and then you get stuff splashed on the bottom. I'd much rather have just a normal hood over the stove.

We have one. Most everyone I know does. We make a lot of big meals to have as leftovers. It's easier to reheat lasagna in a microwave.

But it tastes better to reheat it in the oven.

I have one that I use a lot, but also have a microwave. I have been in situations though where I had very little kitchen space and had to prioritize.

My boyfriend and I don't have a microwave. They take up space and I don't mind heating things up on the stove or the oven. It also keeps us from eating junk food that you just microwave.
I did miss microwave popcorn for a while but I finally found a grocery store that has the stove top one you shake over the burner. It's terrifying yet fun at the same time. 10/10 would recommend.

Jiffy Pop is fun! Takes a little getting used to though. I burnt the fuck out of it the first time.

I don't have one. I don't really have the space for one, and it's not difficult to reheat food without it.

I do not, I've found my food choices are much more healthy when I can't quickly heat something up.

My food choices are a lot more healthy because I can quickly heat veggies up!
